“Malcriada: Formerly Known As Castillos de Plástico” by La Daniella

The Castillos are a multi-generational, working class Puerto Rican and Dominican family of twelve, upheld by the thankless labor of its overlooked matriarch, Layla. Terrified of inheriting her mother’s life of domestic servitude, Noemi awaits a college acceptance letter that would give her the freedom her elders could hardly dream of. But it’s a fiercely guarded family secret that arrives at the doorstep instead.
